September is coming and, with that, another opportunity to honour Canadian Hero, Terry Fox. I highly recommend pairing this art activity with relevant read alouds and age-appropriate discussion to enhance it's significance :) Two of my favourite books for this age group are What Happened To You? and T is for Terry: An ABC of Courage. You can also click here to learn more about Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.
WHAT YOU NEED:
white cardstock
Terry Fox print-out
blue, yellow, and grey crayons or pencil crayons
glue
black construction paper
pre-cut green triangles and brown squares/rectangles
HOW TO MAKE:
Begin by having students create a sky. We talked about how Terry would run on sunny days and rainy days, so students had the choice of which type of sky they wanted to create.
Create a road for Terry to run on by ripping black construction paper into small pieces. Glue these on the bottom of the page.
Add trees to the sides of the road to showcase the terrain Terry experienced on his journey. Students chose various sizes of green triangles and brown "stumps" to assemble into trees and glue onto their pages.
Glue Terry onto the road, showing him on his Marathon of Hope.
Mounting these works onto black cardstock makes them look extra sharp :)

They look beautiful on display!
I hope this activity pairs well with your learning this fall!
Love,
Lindsay
