EGG SHELL MINI VOLCANOES

(Egg) Shell Mountain – which resides in our craft room – continues to grow and so our efforts to derail it must continue, too!

Here’s another colourful activity using egg shells, but this time, it’s even MORE (YES, MORE!!!) magical!!!

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • egg shells (washed and dried)

  • baking soda

  • vinegar

  • food colouring

  • small squirt bottles

  • glitter

  • bits of pipe cleaners

  • tray

  • Playdoh

HOW TO MAKE:

  1. Adhere the egg shells to a tray using itty bitty “bowls” of Playdoh. The egg shells will rest perfectly inside of them

  2. Add a teaspoon (or more….or less!) of baking soda to each shell.

  3. Add glitter and small bits of pipe cleaners to the shells, too!

  4. Pour vinegar into small squirt bottles and add food colouring to each one to create different colours of vinegar.

  5. You know what happens next Add the vinegar to the shells and watch the magic happen!

ACTIVITY EXTENSIONS:

  • Call a friend and tell them all about your mini volcanoes!

  • Bigger kiddos can be challenged to make certain colours appear after the reaction!

CONNECTION STARTERS:

  • What do you think is going to happen when we add the vinegar to each egg shell?

  • What senses can we use to make observations during the activity?

  • What do you see happening?!

  • What do you think might happen if we add more baking soda to the egg shells? What about more vinegar?

  • Which of your friends or cousins would enjoy this activity?

THINGS TO CELEBRATE & ENCOURAGE:

  • helping to prepare materials (e.g. making coloured vinegar, placing eggs on tray, etc.)

  • sharing materials

  • positive collaboration with a sibling or friend

  • making observations

  • making predictions

The girls are already asking to do this activity again and I think they have a pretty loyal ally in me

Happy connecting, sweet friends!

XOXO,

Savannah
