DIY Centerpieces (for kids!)

I adore this activity. Like, ADORE - ALL CAPS! I hope you do too!

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • mini glass jars (these are candle holders from Dollar Tree!)

  • rice

  • crushed rocks

  • feathers

  • dried florals (we used twisty willow, dried wheat, and tiny blue ones that I cannot remember the name of!)

  • washi tape

  • beads

  • scissors

HOW TO MAKE:

  1. Pour dry rice into your container or jar until it is 2/3 full.

  2. Decorate twisty willow with washi tape flags and then stick it into the rice to secure it in place. Feel free to add beads onto any parts that protrude from main stem.

  3. Add beads to other dry elements (e.g. wheat, flowers) by threading the beads over the stem. Stick these elements into the rice as well, being careful not to let beads slide off in the process!

  4. Pour crushed rocks on top of the rice to reinforce the placement of the elements you've already added.

  5. Finish it off by pushing flowers through the gravel mixture to stay in place.

ACTIVITY EXTENSIONS:

  • I see so many versions of this! Christmas themed! Valentine's themed! Sooooooo good!

  • Hang tags (with little messages!) on the branches.

  • Add a set of battery operated string lights!

CONNECTION STARTERS:

  • What is your favourite material to work with?

  • What part of the process did you enjoy the most?

  • How did you decide which colours or materials to use?

  • Where is a good place to put this in our house?!

THINGS TO CELEBRATE & ENCOURAGE:

  • independent decision making during the creative process

  • persevering through challenges that arise during activity

  • sharing materials

  • encouraging other artists

Looking forward to seeing your DIY centerpieces too, friends! Be sure to tag us @theartstadium so we can squeal with delight!

Happy connecting!

Lindsay
